Independence, population 3,700, is located in western Hennepin County, Minnesota. Independence is the gateway to Baker Park Reserve, which is operated by Three Rivers Park district. The City of Independence is named after Lake Independence. The Lake was discovered by early settlers and named on July 4, 1854. Pioneer Creek was also named by the early settlers, as it was once part of the lake. Independence Township was organized on April 11, 1858, and became the Village of Independence on January 8, 1957, and the City of Independence on April 9, 1974.
Independence is a rural city just north of Highway 12 and is home to many horse farms and two regional parks.
The City of Independence is served by four public school districts: #277 Westonka Public School District, #278 Orono Public School District, #879 Delano Public School District, #883 Rockford Public School District.
Parks and Recreation:
There are three city parks located throughout Independence, plus two major Three River Parks – Rebecca and Baker – can be accessed directly from here. Also, the popular Luce Line recreation trail crosses the south side of our community. And, of course, located on the northeast side of our community, is beautiful Lake Independence.
